The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome. Typically the Pope is an old man past normal retirement age. That means in most companies a man as old as the Pope would not be considered old and wise. He would be considered too old to do the job.
The popes and hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church are increasingly traditional, and increasingly out of touch with ordinary Roman Catholic opinion in the developed world. They're out of touch with attitudes to right and wrong in the modern world. The popes and Church hierarchy don't try to reform, rather they blame the modern world for being out of touch with God.
It is no way surprising that Pope Francis is a social conservative because Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI packed the college of cardinals with conservatives like themselves. Francis is conservative but he knows how to do public relations and make old ideas look fresh and new.
