Gaia was the goddess or personification of Earth in ancient Greek mythology. Gaia was one of the Greek Primordial deities -- that is she was one of the first deities of existence, who were born from Chaos (a formless or void state preceding the creation of the universe or cosmos).
Gaia was the great mother of all: the Giants and the Titans (who later create the Olympian gods) were born from her union with Uranus (the sky), while the sea-gods were born from her union with Pontus (the sea).
