Black Skeptics is a blog at FreethoughtBlogs featuring writings by a number of black thinkers and activists, including Sikivu Hutchinson, scholar and author of several books on race, religion, and gender, including Moral Combat: Black Atheists, Gender Politics, and the Values Wars and Godless Americana: Race and Religious Rebels.

Writing in Black Skeptics Sikivu Hutchinson expresses concern that white pastors who become atheists get generous help from white atheists to transfer to alternative work. By contrast dark skinned pastors who are atheists can't easily leave their work because the white atheist community won't help them, while black and Latino churches actively work to redress the structural racial inequality in the USA. [1]

There is a small but growing segment of the black population that are Atheists, Agnostics and/or Humanists but most people assume a black American must be a believer of some kind. Black atheists face prejudice within their own community, in media aimed at the black community atheists are negatively portrayed which reinforces prejudice. Small numbers of black atheists and black atheist groups are working hard to encourage black atheists to come out of the closet and are working to overcome prejudice. [2]

Angelina Latice Collier, (before marriage she was Pollard) was an atheist involved in promoting black non-believers' organisations. Tragically Angelina was murdered in a domestic violence affair leaving three orphaned children. A fund has been set up for the children's college education when they are older, to contribute please go to Angie's Legacy Fund. [3][4]
