When Albert Einstien formulated his theory of general relativity, his equations demanded that the universe expand or contract.

So in 1929, Edwin Hubble looked up in the night sky and saw the galaxies moving away from us, those two times further were going two times faster, and, those three times further were going three times further, and so on.
